There's something about Brent

I REMEMBER my high school friends and I had this major fight not too long ago. Being the drama queen that I am, I told them that they'd know where to find me when they had come to their senses. I'd just be hanging out with... Brent Javier.
Not that I was a major fan or anything. It just so happened that there was this big poster of Brent behind them so he was the first person who came to mind.
I didn't know that I was foretelling my future. Call it cosmic but two months later, my friends did come to their senses and, yes, they found me hanging out with Brent.
Getting a promo-tion
When my internship supervisor asked me if I could join them for a Watsons Beauty and Brent promo activity, I knew it would mean extra hours for my internship. But when Pam told me it would be fun to write about my experience, I knew being part of the promo team was fate.
The job description was fairly easy. Basically, I had to get people to notice Brent (really, is this even a job?) and keep him from being lonely and looking tired and bored.
I had but little knowledge of Brent. I knew that he was a model. He was the guy in the Beauty and Brent promo. He appeared in the society pages. He's Filipino but didn't grow up here. I did remember seeing him once in Greenbelt after seven of us correspondents got makeovers. I also knew that he went shopping with another 2bU! correspondent last year. That was it, I didn't know that the promo would actually reveal a lot more about him. A whole lot more, that is.
Showtime
When I was first introduced to Brent, he just mumbled a "Hi!" He was obviously not a morning person. But then we met at 9 a.m. -- on a Sunday. I wasn't in a very happy mood either.
Showtime came. I was asked to sit next to him to make it look like the booth was busy. Not really a good experience. We were like fish in a fishbowl. Everyone was watching us. I wasn't surprised when the girls opted only to have their photos taken with Brent even if they had five minutes to talk to him. To start a conversation, much more to keep it going, seemed impossible with all the people looking.
Good thing Brent made sure that all the other girls and I became comfortable with the situation. Everything went smoothly after that. I got used to all the staring. Brent got used to all of my queries and kuwento. I also got used to Brent's kakulitan.
Brent may look like your angelic chinito guy-next-door but believe me when I say he's also that devil-may-care-I-will-steal-some-of-your-aratilis naughty kid. He was so kulit that by the end of the day I felt I was babysitting one of my nephews. To think he was more like a grumpy grandpa that morning.
A whole lot cuter
BRENT is king. Monkey King.
It's amazing how appealing Brent is to people even if he doesn't speak. There was this mom with her kids who were asking Brent who he was while they were having their photo with him. Brent just smiled and looked at me.
I remember an old woman well into her 60s buying P1,500 worth of cosmetics just to sit down and chat with Brent. Being the charming guy that he is, Brent gave lola a kiss on the cheek.
A lot of adorable kids had their photos taken with Brent. Having them on his lap made Brent look a whole lot cuter. Another lola urged her grandson to sit beside Brent. She was telling him, "Apo, tabi na sa gwapo para paglaki mo gwapo ka rin." Brent and I just laughed. That was really funny.
While it was true that a lot of kids gamely posed for the camera, there were some who cried. Brent even went after one little girl who ran away from him. The girl just cried harder. Well, that happens to Santa Claus, too, so Brent had no reason to feel bad.
The girls are a whole different story. They just couldn't get enough of him. One girl loved Brent so much she had her photo taken with him at SM Manila and had to come back the next day to have another photo with him at SM North Edsa. There was also this group of girls in SM Makati who kept having their photos retaken as they couldn't get the right shots with their camera phones. Even Sexbomb dancer Weng couldn't resist Brent's charm so she had a photo taken with him.
Brent revealed
By the end of the tour, I got to know the real Brent Javier. He's not as intimidating as he looks, believe me. He hums party music when he's bored. He makes fish noises as well. We both think Paris Hilton's awesome. We both agree that John Legend's really good.
Brent said he was famous for his mighty powerful pitik. He said that it leaves one incapacitated for days. I got a taste of it. "That was it?" I asked. I swear, I've had far more powerful pitiks than the one he gave me. He told me it was just his baby pitik and he was just testing me. Yeah, right. I got tired of talking to him in English. Although he had been in the country for years, he was funny whenever he spoke Tagalog because his eyes would get bigger. I challenged him to say "nakakapagpabagabag." He tried but only succeeded in saying "nakaka-ba-ba-ba."
My verdict: Brent's a pretty cool guy to hang out with. You can trust me on that. I'd be more than happy to be his promo girl again. Whoever he's picking to be his date for the Beauty & Brent promo sure is one lucky girl.
